Chennai-based advanced manufacturing startup ThinkMetal has raised Rs 27 crore in a funding round led by IAN Alpha Fund, with participation from 3i Partners and existing investors. The company plans to use the capital to develop its products, strengthen research and development (R&D), and increase adoption among industrial customers.
Founded by Sabyasachi Ghosh and Arushi Sharma, ThinkMetal is building an integrated metal manufacturing platform aimed at helping manufacturers produce precision metal components with greater speed and lower production costs.
- ThinkMetal Focuses on Metal Additive Manufacturing
ThinkMetal’s product portfolio combines manufacturing equipment, specialised metal materials and software. Its commercial offering, SistemT1, is a metal additive manufacturing system designed to produce precision components using the company’s proprietary FuseX material technology.
Metal additive manufacturing, often referred to as metal 3D printing, builds components layer by layer rather than relying entirely on conventional machining or other subtractive processes. Depending on the application, it can support complex geometries and more flexible production of specialised parts.
ThinkMetal’s approach combines material development with equipment and process control. According to the company, this integrated model is intended to reduce production time and dependence on imported manufacturing technologies.
- Fresh Capital to Support R&D and Commercial Expansion
The newly raised Rs 27 Cr will support product development, expanded R&D capabilities and wider adoption among industrial customers, according to the funding announcement.
ThinkMetal serves sectors including aerospace, defence, space, automotive and electric mobility, where manufacturers require precision engineered components and specialised materials.
The company has progressed from technology development to enterprise pilot projects and is working towards larger commercial deployments, according to the funding report.
- What Is SistemT1 and How Does FuseX Work?
SistemT1 is ThinkMetal’s metal additive manufacturing system, while FuseX is its proprietary material technology. The company’s broader platform combines these elements with manufacturing processes designed to turn digital component designs into physical metal parts.
ThinkMetal says its technology can produce high-value precision components up to 10 times faster and at half the cost of conventional methods. These figures represent the company’s stated performance claims; independently comparable test results and the precise cost and production benchmarks were not available in the funding report.
The company is also expanding its materials library and developing internal capabilities to process additional materials. This could help it address a wider range of industrial requirements as it develops its manufacturing platform.
- Why the Funding Matters for Indian Manufacturing
For industrial technology startups, developing a working product is only one stage of commercialisation. Demonstrating consistent component quality, meeting customer specifications and establishing repeatable production processes are also important before a technology can be adopted more widely.
ThinkMetal’s funding round comes as the company seeks to move towards larger commercial deployments. Its progress will depend on how effectively it translates its technology into reliable industrial output, establishes customer relationships and demonstrates the economics of its manufacturing process.
Rs 27 Cr investment provides additional capital for that next stage. The key milestone to watch will be whether ThinkMetal can convert its product development and enterprise pilots into sustained commercial adoption across its target industries.
